Hanzhong Xiang Yuan Lake New Town

Dr. She is leading a university research team providing hydrologic data for a 28 km2 new town development. Tasks involve developing multiple storm hydrographs and calculating hydrologic inputs to support a hydraulic model being developed by GEO. This model is being used to design a 2.7 km2 water way system that will support a boat taxi system, recreational boating, and swimming. His team is also assessing flood risks and coordinating with the local water resource bureau for permitting purposes.

China Mobile Calling Center Water Resources Planning Master Plan

Dr. She worked on developing two water resources master plans for two new China Mobile call center campus located in the cities of Hauian and Louyang. The most challenging task was to develop an integrated water resource plan to meet US LEED green building standard and Chinese two/three star green building standard. The master plans provide cost effected and newest green technologies in stormwater, wastewater and surface water management.

Guangzhou Educational New Town

Developed low impact development (LID) master plan for the 15 square kilometer newly developed new town of 8 technical colleges in Guangdong Providence. The master provides three choices of low, medium and high density LID layout to improve the drainage system from conveying current 2-year storm event to 10, 20 and 50-year storm event.

Guangzhou Qinghua Innovation Park LID Development

The goal of this project was to improve the drainage system from conveying 3 to 10-year storm events by applying low impact development (LID) in the campus. Dr. She is the innovator and one of the key designers of the infiltration well on the top of 1.6 ha underground park garage. The innovation is the first in the world.

Congdu Eco-Grange Advanced Bioretention System Development

Dr. She is one of the two designers of an Advanced Bioretention System (ABS) that will be the first employed in the world to treat domestic sewer for a residential development. ABS uses special media and vegetation to absorb nutrients and creates a favorable environment for microorganism to degrade pollutants. The system can be used as a decentralized small wastewater treatment facility in villages as well as purification facility for onsite water features.

Shenzhen Urban Planning LID Guidelines

Dr. She is co-author of the Shenzhen Urban Planning LID Guidelines. His role is to introduce LID guidelines from the United States and modify it according to the Shenzhen local planning and design standards. The guidelines will combine the advantages from both countries, and is the first LID guidelines in planning level in China.

Shenzhen University Southern Campus LID Demonstration Project

Dr. She is the co-designer of this state of the art low impact development (LID) demonstration project including eco-roofs, rain gardens, planters, natural drainage system, wetland and landscape pond. The project is designed and constructed for zero discharge of two year storm event. Dr. She innovated a special media that holds the nutrients leaking out from the bioretention system through runoff.

Sha River In-Situ Restoration

Dr. She was awarded Sha River Restoration Demonstration Project by Guangzhou Government of China for 3 million RMB in 2009. The goal of this demonstration project is to prove the biotechnology invented by Dr. She to be used together with oxidation contact technologies to treat 100,000 ton/daily raw sewage directly discharged to the river to meet the basic water quality standard (eliminate odors and increase transparency from 0 to 40 cm, reduce 80% of COD concentration). The scope of the project includes engineering design, construction, monitoring and maintenance. The projected was completed in October, 2010.

Longmu Bay Beach Low Impact Development Design (LID) and Hydrologic Model Development

Dr. She lead the team of stormwater engineers to model and design a network of green streets capable of infiltrating up to the 5-year storm events to protect water quality in an adjacent saltwater canal system. Traditional design methods in China would entail discharging untreated stormwater directly to the canals system creating water quality issues. This design was support by a hydrologic model that Herrera developed to help determine the amount of treatment and infiltration that could be achieved at each of the low impact development (LID) facilities they designed.

Sediment Ex-Situ Remediation

Dr. She was the sole inventor of this most remarkable ex situ sediment remediation project in China. He has filed two patent applications through the project. This project processed 2 million cubic meters of dredged polluted sediment from 32 rivers in Guangzhou. All processed sediments were used for land reclamation and was treated to meet the Chinese Sediment for Agriculture Land Fill Standard. Dr. She invented a biological pretreatment process that digests organic pollutant and oil/grease in the sediment and eliminates odors. After the pretreatment the sediment can be easily dewatered and separated as sand, silt and clay. Since 90% of pollutant residuals are attached to clay sized particles, dewatered sand and silt contain less pollutant and meet the land fill standards for use as construction materials. Heavy metals in clay are solidified and stabilized using biocatalyst. The mixed soil passed TCLP test. This project is currently ongoing and will last for at least two year.

LID Demonstration Project in Bio-Island

Dr. She was the first to introduce LID technology to China. This demonstration project is located in the entrance square of Bio-Island in Guangzhou City, is about 100,000 square meters in size, and is also the first LID project in China. Dr. She and his Shenzhen University team were responsible for designing and monitoring the project after construction.

Source Control of Pollutions in Elliott Bay, Seattle

Washington

Dr. She was the project manager for source control in Duwamish and Elliott Bay drainage basin. The project was first source control program in Washington State. The scope of the project includes establishing a baseline for pollutant loads in the study area; prioritizing the trouble sub-drainage basins and identifying the “hot spots”; developing an instrument to evaluate the source control efficiency; evaluating stormwater BMP’s and developing a pilot education program for watershed. Review water quality standards and establish water quality goals for receiving water bodies; evaluate CSO control strategies for sensitive areas; perform alternatives analysis of strategies to meet water quality goals.
