PROJECT DETAIL

CLIENT: Changsha Pilot Land Development and Construction Co.ltd  LOCATION: Changsha, China  YEAR: 2017  SIZE: 68.3 ha  LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT: SWA Group

SERVICE: Wetland hydrology and habitat structures (schematic design)

Mr. Merkelbach worked with SWA Group in designing a wetland park on the south end of Baxi Island in the Xiang River. He worked in developing a channel network and assigning water elevations to maximize the wetland edge. He also engineered large woody debris (LWD) structures in select locations to prevent scour of the wetland channels during large flood events. A series of perch poles for birds were designed throughout this wetland park to mimic natural habitat structure typically found in wetland and river systems. He also worked in developing a wetland plant framework to create a diverse palette of emergent and woody species that would provide year round food sources for both bird and pollinator species.
